For Friends

“I’m Pregnant…”

How will you support your friend when she shares that she’s pregnant?

An unplanned pregnancy can be overwhelming and scary. It’s important for her to know that she’s not alone. She can navigate this challenging time, and you’ll be there to help her through it.

Here’s how you can support your friend, family member, or girlfriend during this time:

What to Do:

  • Talk and Listen: Check in with her and ask how she’s feeling. Listen carefully to understand what she needs and how you can assist. Sometimes, the best support is simply being there.

  • Reach Out to Loved Ones: Offer to help her share the news with her parents, the child’s father, or other family members who need to know. Help her think through who should be told and when.

  • Help Her Find Resources: There are organizations that can offer support during an unplanned pregnancy. Help her explore her options by visiting sites like OptionLine.org, and offer to assist with making an appointment if needed.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t Shame Her: She may already feel guilty, embarrassed, or ashamed. Be a supportive, nonjudgmental presence in her life. Stay positive and encouraging.

  • Don’t Pressure Her: While you may have your own opinions about what should be done, this is her decision. She needs to know that whatever choice she makes, you’ll stand by her.

  • Don’t Distance Yourself: Many women facing an unplanned pregnancy feel isolated. Reassure her that you will stay by her side and continue to listen, no matter what.
